Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

Lolita's Personality

Macaws are great companion birds. They are incredibly affectionate and intelligent. These birds are ideally suited to families with a variety of members. They can easily become bored and will find ways to keep themselves entertained when their owners aren't involved enough with them. If they aren't socialized properly macaws may become aggressive and may even bite. It is essential that boundaries are clearly established to ensure that the macaw doesn't feel threatened.

In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are active birds who are fond of playing, climbing and interact. They need to spend at least 2 to 3-hours each day in the outdoors to stimulate their minds and get physical exercise. They enjoy playing games, learning tricks and listening to music. They also love playing in parks and playgrounds, hiking and visiting local restaurants and bars. In addition to being a great pet, they also make loving pets for children.

The birds can be quite loud, despite their affection for their mate. They can also be a nuisance to those living nearby. They are capable of loud, ear-splitting calls and screech-calls which can be disruptive in apartments and condos or near young children who might be scared by their noise.

This species is also monomorphic. Females and males can be difficult to distinguish. Because of this the only way to reliably determine sex is through DNA testing. Once the bird's sex is established and breeding can begin, breeding can commence.

Like all pets, Blue and Gold Macaws require training to learn commands, phrases, and tricks. This is not a quick process, and it's important that the owner is patient and realizes that this is not a task to be taken lightly. Positive reinforcement can speed up the process and help correct any issues with behavior.

Lolita's Care

For decades, activists have been pleading for the retirement of Lolita's tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 movie Free Willy sparked public outrage over the return of orca Keiko into the wild, those who fought for her hoped that Lolita was likely to suffer the same fate. Unfortunately, she didn't get the chance to return to the ocean.

The people who are Lolita's captors – the Dolphin Company - have ignored the advice of a veterinary doctor and continue to put her in danger. They harm her health by requiring her to perform for tourists, putting too much stress on her with high-speed circles and head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine, making her lose weight and sabotaging her immune system. Additionally, they put her in an incredibly small tank that is only one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.

In 2022, a new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita as a cousin of theirs, pledged to come up with a plan with a group of Lolita supporters known as Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe, to move her eventually to open water. The plan would have included a sanctuary located on the west coast of Washington where to buy macaw she could stay for the rest of her life, receive medical attention and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen was to be hundreds of times larger than her Miami house and surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.

If the plan was successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki), might still be alive. In the wild, killer whales are social animals that connect with their family members until they die. Lolita, who has lived in a solitary space at Seaquarium in isolation for 40 years, is now being released into the wild. The nation's most active activists including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network, have called for her departure from Seaquarium's stage and eventual release into the wild.

Lolita's Diet

A balanced diet is vital for the health of a gold and blue macaw. They require premium food, as well as plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. A macaw that is well-fed in captivity could live up to 60 years. In addition, this majestic bird needs plenty of room to fly around and exercise.

A blue and gold macaw is a charming pet but is also extremely intelligent. They are known to quickly learn new terms and tricks, and they are highly adaptable. This bird is ideal for those just beginning their journey into avian companionship.

This bird is also social and easily bonds with her family members. Macaws of gold and blue are known to have loud vocalizations including "flock call" as part of their natural behavior. The Miami Seaquarium has released a series of updates about Lolita's health and condition, but questions remain. According to the latest update on the Friends of Lolita site, she consumes 115 pounds salmon per day, in addition to herring, capelin and squid.

Miami Seaquarium, and in particular Lolita is being critiqued for the quality of food that they provide to their killer whales. The 57-year-old orca was removed from Puget Sound, Washington, in the year 1970. Although the species is endangered and is in a tank that some believe is too small.

Lolita's Health

While her beauty is undeniable However, her health continues to deteriorate. Animal welfare groups have expressed concern about her and wish to see her returned to the wild. Lolita has been living at the Miami Seaquarium since 1970 and was a tourist attraction for decades. She has been fighting chronic illnesses and an infection that has left in a fragile state.

The Miami Seaquarium, now owned by the Dolphin Company, has not provided information about Lolita's present health. Friends of Toki, a non-profit organization, has published monthly updates on her health and well being on their website. They show that she is ageing quickly and that her health is deteriorating.

It is not clear what health issues are affecting the orca, as her captor isn't required to divulge this information. However, a database of necropsies from Sea World that was created by the Orca Project shows that kidney disease is a major factor in the deaths of orcas kept in captivity.

Despite the ongoing health issues there is a lot of hope that Lolita may be closer to living in the wild than before. The new owner of Seaquarium has pledged to transfer the whale out of her tank to her natural waters in the Pacific.

After years of pressure from PETA and others, the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a sanctuary at the sea and she will be able to go swimming in the deep sea, perhaps even reconnect with her orca mother. Unfortunately, these plans came too late for the beloved whale who died on Friday of what was believed to be a renal problem.
